By the moon, or choosing so to soar,
such thoughts of love engage my mind
as move the loon to cry aloud
below intransigent stars that show
no more or surer hint of how
than he finds in the mundane mud.
Late summer past, their green bloom
eutrophies still-warming shallows
beyond the deeper chill.
